The ideal commuter car is fast, light, modular, certifiably safe, gets at least 100 miles per gallon, and won't cost an arm and a leg. While we were all daydreaming, the Wikispeed team was building it.

The Wikispeed C3 stands for Comfortable Commuter Car, and that's very much been the goal for Seattle-based software consultant turned automotive designer Joe Justice.

The global, distributed team has plans to make a production car that costs $17,995 or $10,000 as a kit. The vehicle has a modular design so its car body can be changed from a convertible to a pickup truck and its gas engine can rapidly be swapped for an electric one. Before you get too excited, though, there's no lockable trunk, roof or cup holders.

I wonder what kind of efficiency the car gets as an EV. With such high ICE-powered efficiency of 109mpg, I can only assume the drag coefficient is 3 or 4 times smaller than most other cars. So would the EV-powered version get 300 or 400 MPGe? (That would mean a 20kWh charge would last for 300 or 400 miles).

Good idea for the "Baby Boomer Generation". Couples that want a hi MPG car for a low price.

The headline of the article is deceiving... the $10K price tag is only if you buy the car as a kit and assemble it yourself. If you want to drive the car off the lot is will cost you over $17K.

Nonetheless, this is just one more car designed for efficiency that will never make it past the safety checks.

Add me to the "I'll beleive it when I see it" crowd!

Most likely when this might hit the market it'll be as big as a baby carriage and not at all practical.

Let's see, 100 mpg, no roof, no cup holder; why bother with 4 or even 3 wheels, get a motorcycle.
