NY Assembly looks to restrict gasoline wholesalers, retailers from 'zone pricing'

GasBuddy Blog -- We're all seeing lower gas prices but in New York the state average is still well above the rest of the country, and in the NY metro area, prices are even higher. They always are.

Only one state in the country taxes gasoline higher than NY's 67.4 cents per gallon (that's Connecticut's $0.71) so it's always frustrating for residents in the NY metro area to see their neighbors in New Jersey pay less than half the taxes they pay. NJ fuel taxes are 32.9 cents per gallon.

We bring this up because when we hear legislators talk about "defending the consumers' right to fair gas prices" we can't help but think that excessive taxation is probably the best place to start.

In New York nobody's talking about reducing gas...

It looks like there will have to be a revolution in order to get the government out of our lives. Hate to even think that but one day it will have to happen.

WBBNC, the reason NY and NC have higher gas taxes is because of the State Dem Congress and governors. You know the old saying "Tax & Spend Democrats" and its the gospel truth.

There's the same situation in NC: SC has much lower gas price. It makes you think to move there for just that reason

Being on the West Coast, enduring the California and Nevada tax structures in combination, I would have to agree. Governmental taxation has a lot to do with the high fuel prices.

I don't mind zone pricing so much. That's capitalism. They're charging what the market will bear. If they thought they couldn't sell as much gas at that price, they would lower the price. I just get gas somewhere else if I think the price is too high. Fortunately the cheapest in town is usually the one near my house.

It seems to me the politicians are trying to deflect criticism away from themselves.

We aren't subjects and BO doesn't get to reward millions of illegal aliens for breaking laws without congressional approval.
The "dream" (nightmare) act was already shot down. BO is just trying to find new voters after people are starting to wise up like in Wisconsin.
Anyone else 2012!

NY always has a better idea. Now when the fuels are not available because they lose money, who will step in?
